Keeping Content Fresh
July 2, 2008 | Written by Yan Shikhvarger
Many say that "Content is King" online. For the most part, I tend to agree with that viewpoint. For many sites, ongoing content generation is an issue that has to be resolved and stay top of mind. An interesting approach was taken a few years ago by the Philadelphia Tourism Board and is now bearing fruit with steady traffic growth. Instead of hiring additional editorial staff to churn out content, the organization created a new site (www.uwishunu.com) run by a dedicated network of Philadelphia enthusiasts. Basically, this is a large collaborative blog on behalf of the city of Philadelphia. It works because the people granted the privileged to blog like what they are writing about, and are associated with a credible organization.
This is an interesting approach for any site that needs content but cannot afford a large editorial staff. It can use its credibility to locate online writers that are already genuinely interested in relevant topics and offer them opportunities to become content contributors. Everyone wins in this case. (The writers, of course, are screened for their positions and ability to write.)
Tourisms boards around the world, please take notice.
